Meet Oscar: a soon-to-be first-generation high school graduate from Fox High, and after that, a first-generation college graduate. He and his family emigrated from Mexico when he was a child.
Oscar always had high hopes, but he didn’t know how to begin his path to college. Thankfully, Oscar's dreams have become a reality, thanks to the leadership skills and opportunities gained from United Way of Greater St. Louis-supported Wyman’s Teen Leadership Program (TLP).
“TLP was the first time someone outside of my family really believed in me,” Oscar says.
TLP boosts teens' tenacity through six consecutive years of leadership experiences. Wyman coaches help teens identify their values, talents and interests, and explore aligned career paths. They participate in college tours, more than 40 hours of community service annually, and work with coaches to apply for college or other postsecondary options.
TLP has helped Oscar develop his sense of self. After high school, he plans to pursue his degree in business and social work at Missouri State with the hope to someday give back to others.
