Jean Carlos has lived in Brooklincito his entire life. In his urban neighborhood in Panama City, he faces challenges each day that threaten his self-esteem, studies and ultimately, his future.
But since the opening of the Por Mi Barrio Outreach Center in his neighborhood — just one of the United Way Panama network of community centers located in 19 at-risk communities — Jean Carlos has been a regular. It’s there that he’s been working on his personal issues, developing a life plan, and making sure he works toward his dreams through different programs offered by the Center.
This year, Jean Carlos participated in a creative writing workshop there and recently shared some of his words:
“In my skin I feel the happiness of when my family is together
and the desire to walk through the doors of college.
My skin doesn't show the real me...
Someday I will love the skin I’m in.”
The forward-thinking and dedicated programs supported by United Way Panama's network are offering young people like Jean Carlos an opportunity to tap into their full potential. We are confident that his brightest days are ahead.
