Local volunteer opportunities anyone can do

Easy ways to start volunteering now

By Hannah Norman, Community Engagement Specialist at United Way of Greater Chattanooga

We’re lucky to live in such a philanthropic, caring town. Call it southern manners or the result of a large faith community – people here really care about their neighbors. If you’ve ever volunteered before, you know just how meaningful it is to spend your time and effort helping someone else.

One of my big focuses at my job at United Way of Greater Chattanooga is overseeing the Volunteer Center. As community conveners, we strive to get the word out on volunteer opportunities at a plethora of nonprofit organizations in greater Chattanooga. The easiest way to view what’s needed is to visit ihelpchattanooga.org. Here, you can see current need listings (sort of like job postings) for nonprofits.

I truly believe anyone can volunteer! No matter your skills or your time commitment, if you are willing to give back to the community by volunteering, there is something for you. Here are a few of my suggestions:

For families – Food & Fun/Mobile Fit Program Volunteer at YMCA

For someone passionate about helping women – Appointment Line Volunteer at Signal Centers

For a traveler or someone who needs a digital opportunity – Work-from-home Marketing Administrator at Kingdom Majesty International Ministries

For the animal lover – Pet Foster Parent at Tennessee Humane Animal League Pet Placement Center
