When Maria found out she was pregnant, she was referred to an early learning site for extra support during her son’s first few years of life. After reviewing information she received from the on-site nurse health navigator, Nurse Johnnie, Maria realized her son might have some developmental challenges. She reached out to Nurse Johnnie for guidance, and after meeting with several specialists, Maria learned that her son has muscular dystrophy.
All of these pieces, including Nurse Johnnie’s placement, were organized by United Way’s Healthy Beginnings program. Because Maria was helped through this process and received proper insurance coverage, she is a better advocate and provider for her son’s medical and educational needs.
Just last year, United Way of Greater Atlanta and its partners helped 18,003 individuals, children and families establish a medical home and receive preventative health services.
