The United Way 2-1-1 Helpline is often a lifeline for people calling for emergency food, shelter or other critical services. Did you know it can also offer help with life’s little surprises?

Kelly is a single working mom keeps herself to a tight budget and works overtime when she can. Imagine her shock when she opened her water bill and saw she owed $10,000.

She hadn’t realized it, but a water pipe had burst under her home and her bill skyrocketed. In a panic, she called her sister, who told her to call 2-1-1. Call specialist Rozie Murphy answered Kelly’s call, and provided information, guidance and encouragement—just what Kelly needed.

“I’m so incredibly grateful for Rozie’s help. I got my bill straightened out and the pipe fixed. Because of 2-1-1, my water is still on. I even shared the information Rozie gave me with my neighbors, who were also having water issues.”

2-1-1 is on call to help 24/7, every day of the year, with information on a wide range of concerns including:

  • Basic human needs
  • Physical and mental health
  • Employment support
  • Support for seniors and people with disabilities
  • Support for children, youth and families
  • Volunteer opportunities and donations
