The United Way Ben Center Bus added some miles last week visiting generous companies that donated back-to-school supplies to us, including CareFirst BlueCross Blue Shield, Fidelity & Guaranty Life, Gilbane Building Company, Miles & Stockbridge, and OneMain Financial.

First stop: Gilbane Building Company in Locust Point. The company built Fort Worthington Elementary/Middle School and Frederick Elementary School in the city, so student success is a cause near and dear to their hearts.

Then it was on to…Fidelity & Guaranty Life, where Mike Markett, Director of IT Infrastructure, echoed the sentiments of many of our corporate donors: They want to give back to the neighborhoods they’re based and do work in.

And at our final stop: Miles & Stockbridge’s Dana Gloor, Principal, noted that having the right resources is an integral part of ensuring that students are prepared and ready to learn when the school year begins. (She’s right. Research shows that first few weeks of school are crucial to a student’s academic success later in the year.) We’re pleased to donate backpacks and school supplies to area students again this year.

At last, our bus full of backpacks, notebooks, binders, pencils, markers, and more pulled up to the entrance of Van Bokkelen Elementary School in Severn, where volunteers unloaded supplies and packed them into donated backpacks that were distributed to area students and their families.
