Ride United with Lyft

A gift to 211 and Lyft means that someone will be there.

When there is no one else available, a gift to 2-1-1 and Lyft means that someone will be.

“I haven’t eaten in days, I don’t know what to do. I don’t have money for the bus. I can’t get there.”

“I’m trying to get back on my feet. I have to get to this interview tomorrow.”

“I’m having surgery and I need someone to take me home afterwards, but I don’t have anyone who can pick me up.”

Each month, hundreds of requests come through our United Way Maryland 211 Helpline. Our team is able to connect them to the services they need, but callers can’t always access them due to transportation restrictions.

Thanks to a partnership with Lyft, United Way has launched Ride United, a transportation access initiative to address unmet transportation needs for families and individuals. United Way of Central Maryland is one of the partnership locations and will receive a grant to help connect callers with Lyft rides.

Unfortunately, each ride costs, on average, $18.50, which means that the dollars for this initiative will run out quickly. But you can help!

A donation of any size means that someone can get a ride to a grocery store rather than pay the added cost at the corner convenience store. Your donation gives someone a ride to the emergency room or doctor's office. When there is no one else available, a gift to 211 and Lyft means that someone will be.

Here's how some of our callers have been helped so far:

  • A father whose car was broken down was able to take his seven-year-old daughter to the emergency room.
  • A man working two jobs, but who still can't make ends meet, got a utility turn-off notice. With no bus stops near the location where he could get help, we provided him with a ride.
  • After a 79-year-old woman's neighbor was called into work, leaving her no way to get to a critical doctor's appointment, we were able to get her there.
