Jose and his wife Crystal work hard to provide a safe and stable home for their family. Although Jose worked full time, he struggled each month to make ends meet.
Jose and his family are not alone. Almost half of U.S. households are above the federal poverty level but don’t have enough money to make ends meet or whether a significant emergency. “I want to be a good role model for my family and make sure they have the opportunity to go to school and get a higher education,” said Jose.
Jose enrolled in United Way’s Financial Stability Initiative for help. He met with Gina, a Financial Stability Initiative Coach at La Casa De Esperanza, a Waukesha-based nonprofit. Gina worked with Jose to develop a step-by-step plan to meet his financial goals.
Soon, Jose was approved for a home loan modification, which saved his family close to $300 a month in mortgage payments. With improved credit and more money in the bank, Jose was able to purchase a reliable vehicle and go back to school to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. “It is such a great feeling,” says Jose.
