Tatianna knows that balancing her dreams of launching her business, staying in school, and keeping her debt to a minimum will require hard work and seeking out support when she needs it. She is a student enrolled in the business administration program at Prince George’s Community College (PGCC), with dreams of getting her bachelor’s degree and becoming an entrepreneur. Last year, she attended a learning event on campus and was excited to learn that United Way NCA’s Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) at PGCC, Powered by SunTrust offers personalized advice on managing debt, budgeting, and putting together a business plan. She scheduled a financial coaching appointment, and she was quickly able to come up with a plan to pay down high-interest credit card debt and take on only the student loans she needs to move forward with her education. Tatianna shared her dreams of owning a business with her financial coach, who connected her to resources to help her turn a hobby into a viable business idea. She now has a business plan and is in the early stages of launching Princess Lily’s Hair Closet, a business selling premium hair extensions and wigs.
Tatianna credits the FEC for offering her the encouragement and financial knowledge she needs to plan for success as a young student and entrepreneur. “They have done an amazing job helping me with setting goals, things like that. We’ve talked about starting my business plan, personal finance as far as credit cards, unwanted debt, school loans, and paying for college,” Tatianna shared. “We came up with a plan together. It’s impossible to do it by yourself.”
