Tax Toolkit (PDF)
United Way has created a step-by-step Tax Toolkit to make sure you have all the necessary paperwork ready to file your income tax return--and that you're not missing any deductions! This includes document reminders, overlooked tax credits, volunteer in-person tax assistance and online services to file your taxes for free.

Some “free” tax preparation products only offer federal (not state) filings, or charge extra for anything beyond the most basic forms. MyFreeTaxes is completely free for individuals and families who earned less than $66,000 in 2018 — whether you file in multiple states, work freelance, have a side gig, or earn investment income. This is the only free, national, online tax filing product offered by a nonprofit. United Way has made it available to over 100 million U.S. taxpayers as part of our fight for the financial stability of every person in every community.
Did You Know…?
Only one in five people who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) take advantage of it. Many do not even know they qualify. That’s why MyFreeTaxes promotes critical tax credits like the EITC and Child Credit.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
Prefer to meet with someone face-to-face to make sure you're filing your tax return correctly? For households earning less than $55,000 there's VITA--Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. VITA is a safe, simple way to file your taxes for FREE. With volunteers, VITA prepares tax returns at no cost for families that earn less than $55,000 per year by working as a team to make sure everything is right and that all returns are quality reviewed.
United Way of Western Connecticut is proud to support VITA programs in our community every year and work alongside the Connecticut Association of Human Services (CAHS) and other community partners to provide this service that can put more dollars back into our community and the pockets of hard-working households across the state. For more information, visit http://www.uwwesternct.org/vita or https://uwc.211ct.org/taxhelp
Take action. Congress passed a spending bill earlier this year that increased funding for VITA by 20% to $18 million. Join United Way in thanking Congress for this recent increase and ask them to make the funding permanent, so that millions of Americans can continue to count on this high-quality, free, and reliable service year after year. Since 2009, MyFreeTaxes and VITA have helped millions of U.S. taxpayers nationwide save more than $10 billion. In 2018, Connecticut taxpayers received more than $55 million dollars through VITA-filed tax returns. That's $55 million back into the pockets of hard-working families and our communities!
