Having the necessary resources and knowing where to find them will  save you tons of stress when it comes to filing your taxes by the April 15 deadline. We've compiled this list to help ensure that you're squared away with Uncle Sam and Hartford.

United Way has created a step-by-step Tax Toolkit to make sure you have all the necessary paperwork ready to file your income tax return--and that you're not missing any deductions! This includes document reminders, overlooked tax credits, volunteer in-person tax assistance and online services to file your taxes for free.

MyFreeTaxes.com
Some “free” tax preparation products only offer federal (not state) filings, or charge extra for anything beyond the most basic forms. MyFreeTaxes is completely free for individuals and families who simple returns — whether you file in multiple states, work freelance, have a side gig, or earn investment income. This is the only free, national, online tax filing product offered by a nonprofit. United Way has made it available to over 100 million U.S. taxpayers as part of our fight for the financial stability of every person in every community.

Did You Know…?
Only one in five people who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) take advantage of it. Many do not even know they qualify. That’s why MyFreeTaxes promotes critical tax credits like the EITC and Child Credit.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
Prefer to speak with someone face-to-face to make sure you're filing your tax return correctly? For households earning less than $56,000 there's VITA--Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.VITA is a safe, simple way to file your taxes for FREE. Now offered virtually, trained VITA volunteers prepare tax returns at no cost for families that earn less than $56,000 per year by working as a team to make sure everything is right and that all returns are quality reviewed.

Since 2009, MyFreeTaxes and VITA have helped millions of U.S. taxpayers nationwide save more than $10 billion. In 2018, Connecticut taxpayers received more than $55 million dollars through VITA-filed tax returns. That's $55 million back into the pockets of hard-working families and our communities!

  • United Way Financial Stability Center (www.uwwesternct.org/foc) offers clients confidential one-on-one budget coaching, credit repair and asset-building. For more information, contact Casey Levene, 203-297-6674.
  • My Smart Money (https://www.unitedway.org/my-smart-money) Managing your money can be confusing and overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.   • ALICE Saves (https://alice.ctunitedway.org/alicesaves) offers a matched savings program where you can earn a $10 match for every $20 saved at the end of each month for six months. Participants can have $180 in the bank when they complete the savings program. It gets people into the savings habit and puts them on the path to greater financial stability.
    ALICE Saves also provides free access to financial advice through TrustPlus a technology enabled program that provides advice at the user’s convenience.
