Jamie was a 3rd grade student who scored below the 3rd grade level on her reading assessment test administered at the beginning of the school year. Fortunately, Jamie received help when her teacher connected her with the YMCA's Y-Read program. After just a few weeks, not only did Jamie's reading skills improve, but her teacher also noticed a drastic difference in her self-esteem. "Jamie was a kind and caring student. Once she gained confidence in herself, she wanted to help others in the Y-Read program succeed. Her enthusiasm and positive spirit were contagious," said Jamie's teacher.
Jamie noticed that a new student in the Y-Read program was struggling, so she asked her teacher if she could peer tutor the new student using the skills, activities and games she herself had learned through the Y-Read program. Three weeks later, Jamie took the post STAR Reading Assessment, and she scored not only at, but significantly above her grade level. Jamie's peer also improved her reading skills and her peer's parents noticed great improvement in her homework and grades.
