The opportunity to be anything they want. The chance to succeed. Support in their corner. All kids deserve these things. We’re working to help pre-teens, teens and young adults in our community get that chance.
Nationally 47% of students graduate high school unprepared for college or career
By 8th grade, 2 in 3 students in the U.S. are reading below proficiency
1 in 7 high schoolers in the U.S. miss graduating on time
The statistics are only part of the story. Kids in our community face tangible challenges everyday. Kids who have instability at home may miss more school days than their classmates. Teens who balance school with a job that contributes to their family’s income may struggle to keep up with assignments. Students who lack transportation to get to summer learning programs miss crucial opportunities to extend their education.
We’re Changing the Story
United Way of Southwestern Indiana is fighting for these kids and helping change their stories.
Through a variety of programs and services we give kids, especially those from under-resourced neighborhoods or living in high-poverty conditions, the help they need – and deserve. Our initiatives help young people gain diplomas, degrees, knowledge and skills by providing the support they need to dream big and reach their potential.
United Way of Southwestern Indiana invests in youth success programs that provides learning opportunities and supports kids when they are not in school; connects kids with caring adult mentors so they can understand and achieve all their future possibilities; helps kids stay in school, work towards graduation and achieve success beyond high school; teaches kids healthy behaviors and promotes self esteem; and gives kids the opportunity to gain work experience for fulfilling careers in the future.
