Sharita Sims, a Women in Philanthropy member, has been volunteering with United Way of the Midlands since her manager spoke to her about the group about four years ago.
“I believe in giving back but I wasn’t sure how to get involved,” Sharita said. “My manager mentioned all the great things they are doing, and it compelled me to become a part of something so great.”
Women in Philanthropy, the Midlands’ first women’s leadership initiative, was established as a giving circle focused on leadership development, education, advocacy and networking.
Sharita is the community health social worker at Richland Library where she hopes to inspire everyone to not to be afraid to ask questions and think of possibilities every day.
When asked what leadership advice she would give to individuals starting their careers, she said it’s important to leave room for things to come up.
“Never make your plate over 75% full, because things happen and you need room to handle them,” she shared. “Also get involved and get active with things you are passionate about. You’re necessary to and for the work that needs to be done.”
One of Sharita’s favorite experiences as a member of WIP was 2019 Power of the Purse, which is the annual signature fundraiser and features a one-of-a-kind auction of designer handbags and other unique items. Funds raised benefits WIP grantees and United Way's Community Impact fund.
“It was such a magical experience,” she said. "I really loved the planning, decorating and seeing it all come together.”
Fun fact: Her favorite book is The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory and she enjoys spending time with family and friends when not working.
