Education not only increases a child's chance for success in work and life, it's also been shown to be a core determinant of health and well-being. And a quality education begins with reading.
But it's not an easy thing, learning to read. Our brains are naturally wired to speak, but they are not naturally wired to read and write. We need to be taught how to read - and parents are a child's first teacher.
Having age-appropriate books in the home is an important tool for parents to read aloud every day and foster the love of reading in their child. United Way of Wells County supports parents of young children by sponsoring the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program for Wells County children from birth to age 5.
Currently, over 900 local children receive a free, high quality, age-appropriate book in the mail each month. By their 5th birthday, a child will have a library of sixty books they can grow with!
You can support local families too with your gift today. Please consider giving.
P.S. Did you know that charitable deductions for non-itemizers has been expanded for 2021 to allow $300 for individuals and $600 for married filing jointly.
